Last Sunday, the one night only concert version of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty’s Little Dancer sold out at the famed Theatre Royal Drury Lane, which consists of 2,200 seats. The concert was a triumph and had an immediate standing ovation at the beginning of the curtain calls. Various theater owners are in talks now for a future full length production of the musical.
Tiler Peck stars as Young Marie in the show, which tells the story of Edgar Degas' famous sculpture. She was joined by Julian Ovenden as Edgar Degas, Laura Pitt-Pulford as Adult Marie and Josefina Gabrielle as Martine.
The concert staging of Little Dancer was directed and choreographed by two time Olivier Award winner Susan Stroman, who also created the original London productions of Crazy for You, Contact, The Producers, Oklahoma, and The Scottsboro Boys. The musical explores the life of Marie van Goethem, a young ballerina who posed for Degas and became the most famous dancer in history. The show is set in the "harsh backstage world of the Paris Opera Ballet," where Marie navigates poverty, ambition, and the challenges faced by young women in a male-dominated world.
Stay tuned as a London West End production of the full musical is announced for the near future!
